WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT, OWEN?

A review by Mr. B. from the Grandview Branch:

It’s all about doing the right thing. It’s all about finding yourself. It’s really all about finding yourself by doing the right thing for your friend. In this role-model series title, Owen Foote, Soccer Star, Stephanie Greene shows young readers that doing what’s right can be tough but satisfying.

Second grader Owen Foote has been playing soccer for several years, but his best friend, Joseph, is new to the sport; naturally awkward; inexperienced; unsure of himself; and only playing to please Owen. Owen, in turn, has promised to protect and mentor best friend Joseph. When Coach separates the team by skills and plans to play just the best players, Owen has to make some tough choices and a very difficult phone call.

STUEY LEWIS WANTS TO READ

Stuey is worried. He's been in second grade for two whole days, yet he still can't read! It seems that even hanging out with his very best friend makes him feel stressed about reading. It's a good thing he has a very understanding teacher and his favorite holiday, Halloween, just around the corner to help him cope.

The One and Only Stuey Lewis by Jane Schoenberg is light-hearted beginning chapter book for readers in 2nd-3rd grades about a boy learning to read, his friends and family.

FROM WILD WILLIE

Vivian, Children's Librarian at Casa likes:

The Losers Fight Back: A Wild Willie Mystery by Barbara Joosse

Wild Willie and Lucky Lucy are eager to win a soccer game, but they’ll need someone who has the right height and build in order to beat the other team! Chuckie is a great candidate but will it really be worth paying him or doing his chores to get him to play in the game?

For grades 3 and 4.
