AMELIA BEDELIA: BY THE YARD

Young Amelia Bedelia’s parents love to hold yard sales to clear out their clutter. At first Amelia is hesitant to sell their belongings but as potential buyers browse around, she becomes intrigued with the whole idea of garage sales. Amelia puts her good customer service skills to use as she agrees to dig up the flowers in their yard to sell to a neighbor; even though, the yard itself is not for sale!

By the Yard is part of the young Amelia Bedelia series by Herman Parish, great for beginning readers.  This book concentrates on family, community and helpfulness, while enhancing readers' vocabulary.

CAN FEAR BE FUNNY?

AGAINST THE ODDS by Marjolijn Hof is just that - odd. Kiki's father goes off to help people in a war-torn country, because that's what adventurous doctors do. But Kiki is stuck at home with her worried mother (she's worried too, not that she can admit it) and their stinky old dog. What happens if her father dies? Is there some law in the universe that if something dies, something else will stay alive longer? These, and other moral issues, are confronted with a dark quirky humor that will intrigue many a reader. For grades 5 and up.

BE A HOT FUDGE HERO!

In this beginning chapter book, the main character is very determined. HOT FUDGE HERO by Pat Brisson, Bertie learns many life lessons from experiences he has in every day life. The book is divided into three stories. The first story, “Bertie and Mr. Muckleberg,” transforms a mean old neighbor and his mean old pets into new friends. In “Sax Magic,” Bertie’s fairy godfather Stan gives him a magic hat that helps Bertie play the saxophone like a pro as long as he keeps practicing. It turns out to be a lucky day for Bertie in “Turkey Day.” Even though Bertie doesn’t get to bowl with his favorite bowling ball, he still gets a strike. For 2nd-4th grades.
