WHERE COULD ELEPHANT BE HIDING?

Have you ever played hide-and-seek with an elephant before? A boy is doing just that, but it seems the large animal is nowhere to be found. Can you see the elephant blending into the pages as the beautiful colors and illustrations try to fool your eyes? Will the boy find elephant in the end?

Have You Seen Elephant? written and illustrated by David Barrow has beautiful and colorful illustrations, and is perfect for readers who enjoy silly stories and fun games.

A great read aloud for children ages 2 and up.

ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS, SHOOT!

You might have played the game Rock Paper Scissors before (maybe with a friend to decide who will get the last piece of pizza?) but you've probably never considered it's origin story. Where did they come from and how did their first battle come about? Wonder no more with the publication of The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Adam Rex. This hilariously clever picture book tells all, from Rock's first challenge in the Kingdom of Backyard to Paper's battles with Printer in the Empire of Mom's Home Office to Scissors's many trials in the Kitchen Realm to their eventual final confrontation. Each one was a victor in his or her own stomping grounds, but who will emerge triumphant when they finally meet one another and wage the ultimate war?

Daywalt (author of the beloved Day the Crayons Quit and Day the Crayons Came Home) keeps readers guessing who the champion will be while Rex gives them many entertaining details to pore over, making this a fun picture book to read aloud in a group setting or to share one-on-one with preschoolers to second graders.

The battle lines have been (cleverly) drawn, but no matter which character comes out victorious, this book is sure win over anyone who reads it.

A LIBRARY ADVENTURE TO REMEMBER

Luigi Lemoncello is an ink drinker!  He's loved everything about books and libraries for his whole life.  When he grows up to become a successful entrepreneur, he decides to give back to his community and builds a state of the art public library.  Before its grand opening, twelve students from the local elementary school are selected to take part in a library sleepover.  As part of their stay, they participate in a number of strategy games.  But when a grand prize is announced, they are each faced with the decision to try to win the grand prize individually or win as a team.

With so many twists and turns, Chris Grabenstein's book is a wondrous read filled with so many treasures and unforgettable characters.  What would you do if you had to Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library?

If you plan to check out Charlie and the Chocolate Factory then do take this along too.  You won't regret it!!  Also, our very own Central Library is undergoing a renovation.  There are still many adventurous things happening in the Children's Room and at our Branch locations. Pick up a Family Events brochure or click on the link glendalepubliclibrary.org for events.

ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCELLO'S LIBRARY

Kyle has won an essay contest and will be participating in the exciting game, "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library."  The twelve students participating in the game are locked inside the new library and have 24 hours to find their way to a hidden exit in the library.  The winner of the game will become the game creator, Luigi Lemoncello’s spokesperson for all his gaming products and more.  Kyle is very excited about this opportunity.  He and his family have been playing Mr. Lemoncello’s games for years and now he gets to be a part of this big event!  The game gives Kyle and the other participants an opportunity to learn more about each other and about Mr. Lemoncello’s and his connection to their town.  Who will win the game?  Who will win this exciting and once-in-a-lifetime game? Read and you shall find out.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein has a lot of reference to children’s material and the gaming element; it is a great page-turner for students in grades 4-6.

GIRLS ARE SO MEAN SOMETIMES

It's summer vacation on Darcy Lane, and Julia is looking forward to a season of swimming, sitting around with her best friend Taylor, and thinking about the neighbor boy Peter. Lo and behold, the new neighbors move in with a girl Julia's age named Alyssa, and that changes everything. For some reason, Alyssa is rude to Julia from day one, steals best friend Taylor (is she such a good friend after all?), and basically makes Julia's life miserable - until the day of the great battle of Russia!

THE BATTLE OF DARCY LANE by Tara Altebrando is your typical, tween angst novel, but is original enough to keep you reading to the very end. Questions like "will Peter and Julia become more than friends?" and "who is the mystery prank caller" intermingle throughout the story, with everything tied up in a nice neat bow at the very end.

 For 4th - 6th grades.

A HIGHSTAKES ADVENTURE

From Mr. B. at the Grandview Branch:

Outlaw by Stephen Davies

Fifteen year old Jake Knight tells his sister Kas that “Adventurers never cry.” Jake has reasons enough to think about it, though. Suspended from his English boarding school for breaking into a prison while playing a GEOCACHE game, Jake finds himself in Africa, with his sister and Ambassador father. While at a State dinner, Jake and Kas are kidnapped by local terrorist Yakuuba Sor who orders them killed after taking Jake’s cell phone. When someone claiming to be Sor rescues them, the adventure doubles. This gripping adventure is told with gusto and humor and is ripe for a Hollywood adaption.
